Slugs love carrots, and can seriously stunt their growth. Keep them off by digging holes near your carrot patch, cutting the bottom of beer cans off, inserting them in the holes and filling them with beer every two or three days. The slugs will fall in, attracted by the smell and you can dispose of them at will.
