You can keep lettuce growing throughout the summer, but it is a bit tricky. The key things to bear in mind are that lettuce doesn’t like extreme heat so plant it in the shade and water it regularly. Some people try the technique of ‘cut and come later’, but you can only use this on certain types of plant and I always find the outer leaves are the least tasty anyway.
